Sea Kayaking

Kayaking information

The waters around Canso are a spectacular destination for sea kayaking. The Canso Islands provide kayakers an opportunity to expereince crystal clear waters, wild life and beautiful scenery. Seals, whales, porpoise and seabirds abound. There are well charted runs between Whitehead and Canso along the rugged coastline for the more experienced paddler, and more sheltered stretches around the Canso Harbour and the stretch of water between Durell Island and the mainland just off Canso for the less experienced. The stretch of water known as The Tickle is especially picturesque in the summer, an area of small boat moorings and seabirds, flanked by the fishermens' cottages and houses along the shoreline, and stands of lobster pots. The sand beach areas off Fox Island Main are also well frequented and popular with paddlers.

I have had guests arrive with their kayaks on their rooftop unaware of just how spectacular this area is for paddling. They have ended up staying longer than planned and depart telling me that it was some of the best paddling they have ever experienced!

Special Discount: Our guests can take advantage of our special discount coupon which gives you a 10% discount when you rent a kayak or take a day trip from Tangier. For the seasoned paddler, Scott also runs a trip between Whitehead and Canso.

Guests wishing to rent must have kayaking experience and be able to do a rescue (i.e., get back into the boat) if you should capsize accidentally. Scott and Gayle can assess your ability and level of experience by talking to you.

On the question of roof racks, to transport your rental kayak, Scott says, "We do have some roof racks, however they may not fit the customers' car (there are so many types these days). It would be preferable if clients brought their own although something can usually be rigged up."
